MyVids.tv launches a new service that gives merchants the ability to easily sell their videos, audios, ebooks or digital downloads on their Facebook fan page and allows fans to access the content within Facebook or on any smartphone, tablet or Kindle Fire.
“What makes this unique”, says founder Kent Thompson, “is that it ties together all of the major platforms so that customers can seamlessly access their content across multiple devices while still keeping the merchant’s Facebook fan page as the central hub of it all. Every major platform wants to be the focal point and ignore the others but the reality is that consumers use them all. We embrace this fact.”
With millions of users and a recent IPO, Facebook has become the most popular social network in the world. Businesses are able to establish their unique identity on Facebook by creating a special fan page that users of the network can interact with and share with their friends. As Kent noted, “A lot of companies aren’t even sending traffic to their websites anymore; they’re just displaying their Facebook page as their website address. So we wanted to utilize the fan pages that businesses are already using and at the same time allow fans to access the content they’ve purchased on any device they want, whether it’s on their phone in the airport or on their Kindle Fire by the pool on vacation.”
Facebook is also known for it’s ability to cause a “viral effect”, which is the term used to describe how a story can be rapidly shared among thousands of people on its network. To take advantage of this effect, MyVids.tv automatically generates free previews of all videos allowing fans to legally share the samples with their friends. Kent adds, “Merchants get the best of both worlds because their videos can still ‘go viral’ like they would on free services such as YouTube, but they can actually make money directly from those who see it and want the full version.”
For easy checkout, MyVids.tv uses Amazon Payments exclusively. “Almost everyone has an Amazon account with a credit card on file, says Kent, so this makes it really easy to make purchases on your phone because all you have to do is type in your Amazon password. This means more sales for merchants.”
For merchants, using Amazon Payments has another huge benefit besides low-friction checkout: low fees. A 30% fee has become standard on sales made within the major digital marketplaces. Founder Kent Thompson explains, “The App Store and Kindle Store are great ways to sell your content and get new customers, but for the fans that are already visiting your Facebook page, there’s no reason to send them back to those stores and give up such a high percentage in fees.” MyVids.tv charges about a third of the industry standard.
